DISTANCE LEARNING

Distance Learning refers to teaching and learning situations in which the instructor and learners are separated by time and/or space. The FAA has developed an extensive Distance Learning capability including Aviation Training Network (ATN), Computer Based Instruction (CBI) and Correspondence Study. By using this multimedia approach, the FAA has reduced the necessity for resident training and increased the flexibility and efficiency of its training programs. The FAA Academy has the capability to make Distance Learning media available to our international customers to complement the resident and in-country course offerings.

CORRESPONDENCE STUDY

The FAA's correspondence study courses are administered by the FAA Academy. Study material is mailed with lessons to be completed and returned to the FAA Academy by the participant as an indication of progress and achievement. Answer sheets and envelopes are provided.

Questions and comments are encouraged and receive the attention of an instructor. A certificate is awarded only upon satisfactory completion of each course. A report of completion is provided for inclusion in training records. Complete information on procedures and rules is contained in the initial enrollment packet of materials.

Please contact the FAA Academy at the address below for course descriptions, enrollment procedures, and tuition charges. The catalog may also be viewed on the FAA Academy's website (www.academy.faa.gov).

COMPUTER-BASED INSTRUCTION (CBI)

Many Academy courses are being conducted in an individualized training mode known as computer-based instruction (CBI). Rather than being in a standard classroom, the training occurs in a learning center environment using a special multi-media computer system. Enrollment in CBI courses is available continuously. Each participant interacts with the computer which presents course lessons, simulates many kinds of equipment and tasks, and provides fully functional laboratory exercises. The computer is also used to manage and track the participant's progress, give assignments, perform testing and keep laboratory portions or required resources in addition to the lessons which are on CD-ROM. Those requirements are listed in the course descriptions. The training is available at the FAA's CBI Learning Center at the FAA Academy. The FAA provides all required resources and arranges the mandatory laboratory portion of the training. Special arrangements can be made to establish a learning center at any location worldwide.

Please contact the Office of International Aviation at the address below for course descriptions, enrollment procedures and tuition charges for CBI courses.

AVIATION TRAINING NETWORK (ATN)

The FAA Academy has the capability to deliver classroom-type training to virtually any country in the world using satellite technology. The technology uses one-way video and one-way audio delivery of information over the satellite to remotely located participants. Participants can communicate with the instructor in the studio using telephone lines to ask verbal questions or to send faxes to the instructor.

The broadcast process involves sending signals via satellite from the FAA Academy studio in Oklahoma City to our current satellite broadcast vendor. The broadcast vendor would receive the FAA satellite signals and rebroadcast them onto the appropriate international satellite. All countries within the footprint of that particular satellite would then be able to receive the FAA broadcast. Charges for ATN courses include three components: the course tuition, the satellite segment from the FAA Academy to the broadcast vendor, and the segment from the vendor to the international countries.

In order to simplify the reception of FAA broadcasts in multiple countries simultaneously, it is recommended that the broadcast be in English with simultaneous interpretations at the receive sites, if necessary. This means that each location requiring translation would need to provide an interpreter at their location.

The following is a representational list of courses successfully delivered via satellite:
