Charged with the responsibility of insuring the safety of aircraft operations, the
Regulatory Standards Division of the FAA Academy provides training encompassing
flight standards, aircraft certification, and aviation systems standards.
Our flight standards training includes aircraft airworthiness, avionics, certification
of pilots and mechanics, and enforcement of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
Although our primary responsibility is providing training to FAA aviation safety
inspectors, we encourage other government agencies and international participants
to benefit from this training as well. Programs include software quality assurance,
en route and base inspections of air operators, evaluation of aviation management
systems, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), specific aircraft systems, and aircraft
structural fatigue.
Aircraft certification training is designed to maintain technical proficiency of certification
engineers, flight test pilots, aviation safety inspectors, project officers, and
regulations and guidance professionals. Resident training programs cover the following:
type certification of aircraft, production certification of aircraft manufacturers
and initial airworthiness certification of new aircraft.
Aviation systems standards training consists of in-flight evaluation of air navigation
facilities and the establishment of en route and terminal flight procedures.
Evaluation of air navigation facilities is done in accordance with International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) coordinated standards including GPS.
In all programs, close liaison is maintained with the Office of International Aviation
to remain current on operational developments and international standards which
could affect training requirements. International participants may enroll in a diversified
range of courses which will provide them with information which can be integrated
into their aviation organizations and training programs.
